1.16 Newcrest Park & Gardens

Early the next morning, Collin, Cameron and Laura were all awake. The night before the triplets had been so engrossed in the party that they forgot they needed to get their very first high school homework done. So before the sun had even risen, all three were working on their homework. Some more productively than others.

Cameron, as usual, worked diligently by himself in his bedroom. He enjoyed the solitude.

Laura and Collin worked together. Though Laura seemed to be working very dilligently, but Collin seemed more interested in talking to his sister than getting his homework done.

"Hey, Laura, what do you think class is going to be like today?" he asked. "This homework... it kind of scares me."

"Honestly, Collin," Laura said, her eyebrows knitting together as she tried her best to concentrate. "I have no idea. But I do know that I need to keep working on this. We're going to be late."

And they were. Cameron headed off to school on his own but Laura and Collin ended up leaving almost a half hour late.

Adaleigh sighed as they finally walked out the door. She was still rolling around in her head how she wanted to talk to the kids about the Legacy. Laurent was still asleep and she knew that he needed to rest because he had work that night. Still he had promised to come with her today so she would need to wake him up soon.

She had a full day ahead. The Newcrest Park & Garden officially opened today. As Mayor of Newcrest, it was her official duty to open it to all residents today. Ceremony was at 10 am. She glanced at her phone.

As she did, the phone buzzed.

Summer.

<<Hey, Mayor McGinnis, heard the park opens today. Mind a little company?>>

Adaleigh smiled.

The park looked vastly different from the small, one bedroom house that she, Laurent and the kids had shared.

Gone were the dark wooden cabin walls, the boards had been painted a lovely and bright white. Her small windows with the flower boxes had been replaced with tall, pure glass windows which allowed enormous light in.

Author's note: Really wanted a glass greenhouse but could not find a non-CC way to make roof so for my purposes, we're saying the roof is actually glass. Hope you can forgive me this one faux pas.

Above the place that had once been their bedroom, the roof had been replaced with a latticed glass roof, to let in the sunshine and allow the plants below all the greatness of the outdoors without the reliance on the seasons.

Inside the kitchen area had been expanded and the bathrooms had been brought into the house (something that Ada had wished they had done a long time ago).

Outside, the family wooden dinner table had been replaced by a long, white metal table with a raised round umbrella stand. Beside it two small round metal tables with bright white umbrellas gave more seating for the local park goer or the wedding guest attendee.

Laurent's bar had been moved in front of the house and was framed by the greenhouse windows so that now Laurent's second passion and Adaleigh's first were happily married, just as they were. It would make a great reception area.

Next door, the altar was moved but every tree and every flower had been transferred with it. Adaleigh had overseen the transplant of each plant herself in the initial days. She wanted to do her best to preserve everything about where she and Laurent had said "I do."

Perhaps someday one or even all of her children would say those same words and make those same promises to their own perfect partner.

And when they did... she could happily sit on the benches outside the jungle gym area and watch her grandchildren play.

Or maybe she could sit and play chess in her retirement.

But for now the grand opening was at hand.

A small crowd had begun to gather for the ceremony and Laurent stood beside her looking daper in a simple suit without a tie. Even J and Summer, new parents, had snuck away to see her give the presentation.

Standing in front of her makeshift podium that the Simsville Coucil had erected for her she lightly ran her fingers on thde edge of her folder. Although she had spent a lot of her time as acting mayor speaking to people and getting funding for the park, it was her first public address and it made her nervous.

"Ada." a voice broke into her reverie and she looked up to see Summer.

"You're up, Mayor McGinnis." Summer said smiling conspiratorily.

Right.

As always, Summer knew her best. And she was right. After all the hard work, it as time. She would officially open the first ever Newcrest build. She felt proud, she felt accomplished.

Smiling broadly she addressed the crowd for the first time. "Good morning everyone, most of you are familiar with me. But for those of you who don't, I am Mayor Adaleigh McGinnis."

"When I applied to be a citizen of this Newcrest Neighborhood project, I had no idea that I--" she turned to look at Laurent and grinned sheepishly, "or my family would come to play such an important role in building this new community."

"Gardens, in particular, for me have always represented community and connectedness, with the earth and with the people they bring together. And this particular garden means so much to the McGinnis family because we have all made sacrafices to let it come into being for the community of Newcrest. As such it is..."

Turning to Laurent, she turned the scirssors handle first towards him and smiled. "...0ur great honor to welcome you to Newcrest Park & Gardens, home to the Adaleigh & Laurent McGinnis Greenhouse."

Laurent smiled and looked confused for a moment and then gently he reached out and took the scissors from her hands before turning to cut the ribbon.

As he cut the ribbon, Adaleigh turned back to the crowd and opened her arms. "Welcome everyone!"

The ribbon cut, Laurent turned back to Adaleigh. The crowd rushed past them and into the gardens to check the place out but he and Adaleigh stayed where they were happily looking into each other's eyes for a moment, like they were the only people in the world.

Finally, Laurent broke the silence. "So they let you name the greenhouse?"

She grinned in return. "I'm Mayor, there isn't much they won't let me do."

Laurent chuckled. "So Mrs. Mayor... what's next?"

Adaleigh looked down and then back up. "I guess now it's time to talk to the kids like we discussed."

"Are you ready to pass on the mantle already?" he asked his eyebrows drawing together in concern.

This time Adaleigh chuckled. "Well, there's still quite a lot of work left to do, management of the park and hiring of the gardeners and of course have to finish up lots of paperwork but we're not getting any older. I am already getting grey hairs."

Laurent smiled one of his heart-melting smiles and held her hand. "You still look as beautiful as the day you walked up to my picnic table and you always will, no matter how many grey hairs you get."

Adaleigh closed her eyes and leaned into the kiss enjoying her husbands warm strength.

Pulling back he looked happily into her eyes. "Well, I better head back home and catch a few more hours of sleep. I have to be at my best, there's talk that they want to promote me to Pastry Chef."

"I just know you'll get that promotion, Laurent." she said happily and then just because she felt the need to. "I love you."

Laurent paused in turning towards home.

"I love you too, Adaleigh McGinnis." he replied, his blue eyes piercing and steady. "And I know that whichever of our kids decides to take up the mantle if they have an ounce of their mother in them, Newcrest will be in great hands."

He reachrd out and squeezed her hand one last time. Adaleigh smiled as she watched him go. Not ready to go home, she walked around the gardens watching the people enjoying the new park and the great sunshine. Laurent was right. Once she spoke to the kids... it would be ok.

Settling on a park bench, she leaned back and watch the kids playing pirate.

After a while, Summer scooted onto the seat next to her and the two sat in silence just watching.

"Penny for your thoughts, Mayor McGinnis?"

Adaleigh smiled.
